Volleyball Falls to Cal (Pa.), Splits Season Series

California, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Volleyball team traveled to Cal (Pa.) for a matchup with the Vulcans. A hard-fought battle between the two teams saw the Vulcans take the match in three sets.  

How it Happened 

Kate Hennessy got the scoring started for the Lakers with a kill. It was followed by a service ace by Kaitlin Murphy, and it gave the Lakers a 2-0 lead. An error by the Vulcans gave the Lakers a 3-0 lead, but the Vulcans scored the next three points to tie the set up at three. Kills by Mevelyn Brazoban and Andrea Zaric gave the lead back to the Lakers, but the Vulcans proceeded to go on a 12-4 run to take the lead 17-11. They followed that run up with an 8-3 run to take the first set 25-14.  

Cal (Pa.) got out to an early 7-4 lead in the second set. A kill by Kaitlin Murphy got the Lakers the serve back. The Lakers proceeded to score five straight points off Alia Mastromatteo serves. The Lakers extended their lead as Kate Hennessy tallied multiple kills and Alexa Mitchell notched a service ace during a run that saw the Lakers take a 16-11 lead. The Vulcans got the set to within four, but a kill by Kaitlin Murphy and a service ace by Alyssa Krause extended the Lakers lead to 21-13. The Vulcans went on a 13-3 run to end set two. They would take the set 26-24.  

Maggie Thomas got the scoring started in set three with a kill. Midway through the third set, the Vulcans led the Lakers 15-11. Asli Erdi had a kill and Alia Mastromatteo had a service ace to bring the Lakers to within two. Andrea Zaric matched a Vulcan kill with one of her own, the score was now 16-14. The Vulcans extended their lead to 21-17, but Kate Hennessy grabbed a kill to cut into the lead. The Lakers tried make a comeback as Asli Erdi added another kill, but the Vulcans scored the last point they needed to take the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.        

Highlights 

Kate Hennessy led the Lakers in kills with 13.  

Kaitlin Murphy added seven kills and led the team in blocks with three. 

Alexa Mitchell continued to rack up assists as she tallied 30 in the match.  

Corinne Bechtold finished the match with 13 digs. 

Alia Mastromatteo found a hole in the Vulcan defense twice with two service aces.  

Next Up 

The Lakers will return to action on Friday, October 27th as they host Seton Hill at 6 PM.
