Erie, PA- The Mercyhurst Women's Soccer team occupies the number one spot in the PSAC West standings and hosted the Gannon Golden Knights tonight, who came in as the second ranked team in the West. In a highly anticipated matchup, the Lakers secured the season sweep of Gannon with a 2-1 victory. It is a great bounce back win after falling to Slippery Rock earlier in the week. The Lakers now hold a 13-2 record on the season.
How it Happened:
A very intense and emotional first half ended in a 0-0 tie, as both defenses made it difficult on one another. The Lakers were without their stud defender, Taryn Baxter, but still showed they're a force to be reckoned with.
As the second half got under way, so did the Laker offense. After securing a hat trick in the first meeting with Gannon, Karah Van Horn once again made a difference in this one. Midway through the half, Van Horn handled a header at mid field and advanced a ball for Corinne Morgan. Morgan then turned on the jets to outrun 2 Gannon defenders and snuck a ball past the Gannon keeper to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead.
Not seven minutes later, Vanessa Evans launched a bullet off the Gannon keeper, and Karah Van Horn was there to clean it up. The tap in extended the Laker lead to 2 until Gannon scored with a little more than five minutes to play. The horn then blew, and the Lakers secured a 2-1 win.
Highlights:
Corinne Morgan is arguably the quickest player in the West, and she now has 7 goals and 7 assists in her freshman year.
Karah Van Horn is also putting together a season to remember. The Junior from Granville, OH now has a team leading 8 goals, and a team leading 9 assists. She has been a pain for the Golden Knights this year, posting some of her best performances in some of the biggest games.
Next Up:
The Lakers go without a mid-week game this week and are back in action on Saturday, October 27th, as they travel to Pitt Johnston for a match at 2:00 PM.
