Box Score Niagara Falls, N.Y. - The Lakers made the trip to see Niagara Saturday night with the team coming away with the tie. The team found themselves down one going into the final period before scoring a pair goals in a 3-3 tie before taking the shooting 1-0.
How it Happened
Despite neither team scoring in the opening period of play, Niagara was able to be come out as the aggressors as they managed to shoot 18 shots with 10 of them on goal. Owen Say continued his strong play between the pipes in the early going, saving all 10 of them to help the Lakers remain even going into the second.
Mercyhurst managed to put a dent into the scoreboard first with Dustin Geregach finding the back of the net midway through the second period. Geregach found an opening near the net on the power play with Steven Agriogianis and Will Margel able to find the junior for the score. Niagara did not stay down for long with them scoring twice in the frame to claim the lead going into the third. They evened up the score in the 10th minute at even strength while able to do so again in the 15th minute to give the Purple Eagles the advantage.
The Lakers were able to flip the script in the third period and score a pair of goals. The first came from Agriogianis in the opening few minutes of the canto to tie the game before Boris Skalos got in on the action with a goal of his own off the assist from Philip Waugh to make it a 3-2 game in favor of Mercyhurst. Niagara worked hard to try and even things up and eventually did so in the 19th minute, sending this one into overtime.
The overtime period went by with neither team scoring so the game continued one with the shootout. Each of the Laker's first two attempts fell short, but Mickey Burns came up clutch with a goal in the team's third try. After his make gave the Lakers the advantage, Owen Say managed to save the Purple Eagles third try to give Mercyhurst the shootout win in their second straight tie.
Highlights
Steven Agriogianis led the team in points with two with one goal and one assist to his line. Both Skalos and Geregach added goals to their ledger in this one while Philip Waugh, Keenan Stewart, Will Margel, and Spencer Smith each registered assists. Owen Say was once again solid in the net with 29 saves to his line, giving him 115 on the season through three games.
Next Game
The Lakers head west for South Bend, In. as they travel to take on Notre Dame next. Mercyhurst plays a pair of games against the Fighting Irish with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 26th, followed by another 7:30 p.m. start the following night.
