Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer hosted Pitt-Johnstown for a PSAC matchup on the Mercyhurst Soccer field. The Lakers went down early but didn't blink as they scored four unanswered goals to beat UPJ 4-1 and improve to 10-1 on the season.
How it Happened
UPJ was able to strike first as they scored on a free kick that snuck in the left side of the goal. UPJ took a 1-0 lead. Just after the kickoff, the Lakers went right down the field and Frank Lovett found Dylan Sumner for a beautiful goal to tie the game up 1-1. Shortly after, Frank Lovett found Dylan Sumner again for a goal. This marked Sumner's third straight game with two goals. After going down 1-0 early, the Lakers quickly erased that deficit and took a 2-1 lead. At halftime the Lakers led the Mountain Cats 2-1.
Early in the second half the Lakers were awarded a penalty kick. Dylan Sumner stepped up and scored yet again, giving himself a hat trick. Just before the end of the game, the Lakers tacked on one more as Ignacio Gallego bounced off the far post and still stayed inside the goal. With that goal, the Lakers went up 4-1, and that would be the final.
Highlights
Dylan Sumner recorded a hat trick, scoring goals ten, eleven, and twelve. Sumner has now scored in six straight games, and now has three multi-goal games in a row.
Frank Lovett recorded two assists on two of Sumner's goals.
Ignacio Gallego scored his third goal of the season, and Johnathan Chase recorded his first assist of the season on the Gallego goal.
