Early Lead Lifts Mercyhurst Past Griffins

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Men's Basketball got their second win of the week on Saturday as they hosted, and beat, Seton Hill. The Lakers got off to a hot start and never looked back from there in the 82-71 victory.

How it Happened

First Quarter

Hot shooting from the Lakers staked them to an early advantage. They shot the lights out to begin things, hitting seven of their first nine shots with the final of that bunch giving them their first double-digit lead. MiyKah McIntosh nailed a three off the assist from Nicholas Lang to make it a 17-6 game just four minutes in.

Coach Manchel's crew did not slow down from there as they ended up taking a 42-29 lead into the halftime break with McIntosh leading the way with 13 points

Second Half

Mercyhurst came out of the locker room and saw their lead balloon up over 20 as they did a nice job in turning defense into offense, like on the steal by Pipeloluwa Ajayi and fast break dunk by Jeff Planutis, giving the Lakers a 57-36 lead.

Mercyhurst continued to use a strong inside presence to help them stay in front.

While Seton Hill tried to make a push in the late goings, their efforts proved not to be enough as Mercyhurst ended up improving to 15-3 overall and 11-3 in conference in the 11-point win.

Highlights

MiyKah McIntosh scored a season-high 23 points on 6-10 shooting to go along with five rebounds and a pair of steals. Ajayi, Aidan Reichert, Michael Bradley, and Planutis all finished with double-digit points, giving Mercyhurst five players with 10 or more points.

Playoff Picture

Mercyhurst is now 15-3 on the season and 11-3 in conference play, good enough to be tied for second in the PSAC West alongside UPJ. The Lakers are still looking up at IUP who is 20-0 overall and 14-0 in the conference. The two teams match up on Owen McCormick Court on Monday, February 6th, with major PSAC implications.

Next Game

The Lakers make the short trip to Edinboro for their next game as they are set to take on the Fighting Scots on Wednesday, February 1st, at 7:30 p.m.
