Women's Soccer Defeats UPJ

Johnstown, Pa. – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer made it a third straight win Wednesday afternoon, defeating the University Pittsburgh Johnstown by a score of 2-0 as the Lakers move to 3-1 in the early part of the campaign.

How it happened

The beginning of the game saw a lot of back-and-forth play with neither team able to take control early on. The Lakers kept pushing, though, forcing UPJ to play defensively in the early going as the Mountain Cats often had trouble getting out of their half of the field. The Lakers proved to be the more aggressive team from the shoot as they mounted several strong attacks through the first 37 minutes and change, but nothing came of it.

The Lakers finally broke through in 38th minute of the game, when the reigning PSAC West Athlete of the Week, Emily Mijares, drove through the teeth of the defense and scored a goal that the UPJ goalkeeper had no chance of saving, making it 1-0.

The Lakers kept on the attack as they managed to record 13 shots in the first half compared to the Mountain Cat's three. Mercyhurst showed no letup as the first stanza began to wind down as they hoped to take a multiple goal lead into the halftime break. To no avail, though, as the first half came to a close with the Lakers ahead 1-0.

Mercyhurst got back to work in the second half with another goal to make it a 2-0 count in favor of the Lakers. Madison Hoover connected with Fern Lazenby in the 58th minute of the contest to give the native of Hull, England her first goal of 2022. Hoover played the ball in the box off of a corner kick and Lazenby didn't hesitate when she got the chance to score, putting the ball in the back of the net. The Lakers then sailed their way to the finish line to grab a 3-0 start to PSAC play.

By The Numbers
The Lakers dominated the game on both sides of the pitch, taking 21 shots with 11 of them on target. UPJ finished with nine shots throughout the match while only four of them were on target. Mercyhurst drew seven corner kicks with many of them turning into scoring situations. Mercyhurst's Maddie Elbro had four saves on her way to recording her second clean sheet of the season.
