Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer tied with Slippery Rock after an action-packed game
How It Happened
There was a lot of back-and-forth play at the start of the game, and neither team seized the initiative right away.
Emily Mijares had a great scoring opportunity in the fifth minute of the match, but it was saved by Emma Yoder.
Mercyhurst kept applying pressure, as they had multiple scoring chances during the first half. Slippery Rock was forced to play defense most of the time. The Lakers' efforts paid off in 29
th minute when
Karah Van Horn beat her defenders with crafty dribble move and scored with a shot to the left.
The Lakers tried to extend their lead in the first half, but couldn't do it, so the half ended with a score 1-0.
Early in the second half of the game, Slippery Rock had more opportunities. They kept forcing Lakers to play defense for prolonged periods of time. They managed to score in 48
th minute when Faith Diffenbacher used her height difference to score a header and put the ball in Mercyhurst goal.
Mercyhurst did everything to score another goal, but Yoder kept saving the ball. She would often come out from the goal to kick the ball out. Even though the Lakers took 12 shots in the second half alone, they did not score again.
Lauren Casey and
Anna Badar took long distance shots it the last minutes of the game but were unsuccessful. The game ended with a tie.
By The Numbers
The Lakers dominated most of the game, they took 19 shots and eight of them on target. Slippery Rock took seven and five of them on goal. Mercyhurst drew seven corner kicks, but didn't create scoring opportunities from them.
Maddie Elbro had four saves and allowed one goal.
