Syracuse, NY – Mercyhurst Men's Soccer put their four-match win streak on the line Wednesday afternoon in their matchup with the Le Moyne Dolphins. The Lakers hit the road for the third time this season with them walking away with a 1-1 tie.
How it happened
The beginning of the game saw a lot of back-and-forth action. The Dolphins proved to be the aggressors early on, controlling the tempo of the game before firing the opening salvo. Le Moyne grabbed an early lead with a goal in the 17th minute with Cameron Stuart finding the back of the net for the sedan time this year.
Mercyhurst had a rebuttal for the Dolphin's score, knotting up the score at one apiece. After Le Moyne's goal, the Lakers began to go on the attack with their aggressiveness leading to frustration for the defense and, eventually, a foul. Sean Kerrigan was fouled by a Dolphin defender just inside the box, giving the Laker's leading scorer a golden opportunity, he did not waste, registering his sixth goal of the season in the 33rd minute.
Mercyhurst continued to be aggressive in the second half, making for an interesting 45 minutes. In the 70th minute, the Lakers had a good scoring opportunity during a corner kick. It looked like Axel Aronnson got a good head on the ball, but a near miss kept the score tied.
Le Moyne had their share of scoring chance in the second half as well as with five minutes left on the clock the Dolphins had a transition opportunity to score. Kerrigan came up big for the Lakers, running back and kicking the ball out of bounds to stop the attack. The Dolphins continued to press on as they had two corner kicks and a free kick in the final few minutes, keeping the ball on Mercyhurst's side of the field for the majority of the stretch The Lakers' defense didn't give in, though, as the game ended with a tie.
By The Numbers
Mercyhurst took 12 shots compared to Le Moyne's seven with the Lakers outshooting the Dolphins 7-3 in the second half alone. The match was full of physical play with 33 fouls combined and seven yellow cards both teams played hard as Aronnson received his first red card of the season. Odelius recorded 3 saves in his second full game in the goal this season, giving him seven stops in his first two career starts.
