Men's Soccer Defeats Lake Erie College

Painesville, OH – The fourth ranked Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team won their fifth game of the season, defeating Lake Erie College by a score of 3-0.

How it happened
The game started with a lot of back-and-forth physical play. Lake Erie had a chance to score in fifth minute of the game, but Lakers' defense led by Jonathan Gomes guarded the goal well.

The Lakers kept applying pressure, pushing Lake Erie to defend their goal multiple times. In 35th minute the Lakers' efforts paid off. After a great pass by Sean Kerrigan, Tom Barry scored a goal. It was his first goal of the 2022 campaign.

With seven minutes left on the clock, Dylan Sumner had a great opportunity to score. He received a pass from Lockie Fay, but his header missed the goal high. The Lakers ended the half first half with a 1-0 lead.

Mercyhurst kept on rolling in the second half of the match. In 51st minute Kerrigan once again reminded everybody about his presence on the field. The Sligo, Ireland native took a shot to the right side, beating Lake Erie's goalkeeper. It was his seventh goal of the season.

The Lakers didn't stop there. In 57th minute of the match defender Martin Grzywa took a charge on the offensive side, scoring his second goal of the season.

Mercyhurst held on to the lead for the rest of second half. A great defensive team effort led by players like Ryan Lieser, guaranteed another clean sheet for the team. The game ended with a score of 3-0, earning the Lakers their fifth win of the season.

By The Number
The Lakers dominated on both sides of the pitch. They only took ten shots, but they did a good job capitalizing on their scoring opportunities. Lake Erie took eight shots, but because of Lakers' pressure on the ball, only one of them was on target. Both Mercyhurst and Lake Erie drew five corner kicks. Gomes recorded one save and another clean sheet of the 2022 season.

What's Next
The Lakers are set to come back home on Wednesday, September 14th to take on Daemen University. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
