Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Volleyball team dropped a hard-fought match against Cal (Pa) on Friday night. The Lakers fought to five sets but ultimately fell 15-6 in set five.
The Vulcans took an early lead on the Lakers going up 9-6 but the Mercyhurst offense found some momentum on two kills from
Paige Miller. The Lakers kept up their lead capitalizing off Vulcan errors and collecting kills from Miller,
Kaitlin Murphy, and
Kate Hennessy. Hennessy finished off the set with a kill putting Mercyhurst on top 26-24.
Set two saw the Lakers go on a six-point run putting them up 14-12; however, Cal responded with a nine-point run of their own that was too much for the Lakers to overcome. Mercyhurst fell in set two 25-19.
In the third set, the Vulcan offense came out hot putting them up 9-3. Kills from Hennessy and Murphy along with a service ace from Naesha Kelly gave the Lakers a one-point lead. The Vulcans offense was too much for Mercyhurst however and Cal took set three 25-21.
The Lakers offense found their footing to begin the fourth set going up 10-5. Kills from Hennessy and
Alia Mastromatteo put the Lakers up 21-12 late in the set. A final kill from Corrinne Bechtold gave the Lakers a 25-20 win forcing a set five.
The final set was dominated by the Vulcans. After switching sides with a score of 8-5 in favor of Cal, the Vulcans went on a six-point streak. A kill from Miller broke up the run, but the Lakers could not keep it alive falling in set five 15-6.
Hennessey and
Kylie Schnars lead the Mercyhurst offense with 11 kills apiece.
Alexa Mitchell was the head table setting for the Lakers with 22 and
Zoe Gadomski posted the most digs for the green and blue with 23.
