Erie, Pa. - After a bout with California (PA.) yesterday, Mercyhurst Volleyball was back on the court Saturday afternoon with a trip to Slippery Rock. The Lakers fought hard, but ultimately fell in three sets, moving to 2-13 on the year.
How it Happened
The Rock were able to take control of the opening canto and never looked back from there. Slippery Rock jumped out to an early lead in the first set with a 14-8 advantage before going on a 6-0 run to move further ahead. The Rock kept on going with them going on to take the first stanza 25-11.
The second set proved to be a more competitive one as the Lakers shook off a rough start. It was a flurry of runs for both teams in the early going as Mercyhurst began with the first two points while The Rock followed with the next three. Mercyhurst used a 5-0 run to jump ahead 9-4 with Slippery Rock following with a 7-0 run to make it a score of 13-9. From that point on the two teams began to trade points with Slippery Rock able to hang onto their advantage until the end to win 25-21.
The third and final set of the affair was a close one to start, but Slippery Rock ended up taking control, and the set, to end the match. It was a total team effort for the Lakers to help them stay even with The Rock as no one registered more than two kills through the first 15 Mercyhurst points. After the Lakers tied things up at 15-15, Slippery Rock began to put some distance between them and their counterpart as they went on an 8-2 run to take a 23-17 lead before sealing the match.

Alia Mastromatteo registered nine assists in a second straight performance to match her second-highest total of the season. Kylie Schnars led the team in kills with eight to give her sole possession of the team lead in kills in a match for the first time this season; it is the fourth time she has led the team overall.
