Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer moves to 7-2-2 on the year with their second win in three days inside their friendly confines. This time around, it was Clarion who came to visit the Lakers with Mercyhurst able to clip the Golden Eagle's wings in the 1-0 win.
How It Happened
There was a lot of back-and-forth play at the start of the game as neither team seized the initiative right away. A couple of minutes into the opening half, Lauren Casey took a long-distance shot, missing high. She didn't miss the second time around as Casey redeemed herself in the 10th minute of the match, as she took a spectacular shot from outside the box and scored, that curled into the upper-right corner of the net, giving Clarion's goalkeeper no chance to reach the ball.
The score held at 1-0 the remained of the first half as neither team could take hold of the momentum from there on out. The Lakers were the aggressors as they tried to add onto their advantage, but came up short heading to the locker room with a one-goal lead.
Clarion came out determined to score in the second half as they applied pressure on offense but couldn't beat Maddie Elbro in the goal. Karah Van Horn and Teagan Mehalko were very active on the offensive side of the field, creating several opportunities for the Lakers, but to no avail. Casey also stayed aggressive in the final half, trying to score another goal, but the Lakers finished the game with a score of 1-0.
By The Numbers
Mercyhurst dominated most of the game, taking 11 shots while seven of them were on target. Thanks to a good performance from the Laker's defense, Clarion could only muster three shots for the fewest shots allowed by Mercyhurst all season. Because of that, Maddie Elbro's job was much easier as she had one save. She recorded her fifth clean sheet of the season in just 11 games.
What's Next
The Lakers travel to Edinboro on Wednesday, October 5th to take on the Fighting Scots. Mercyhurst looks to extend their winning streak to four against Edinboro after already defeating them in their second game of the season 3-1. The first game of October for the Lakers is set to begin at 6:00 p.m.
