Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Women's Soccer found themselves in the middle of a tough match with the Daemen Wildcats with the Lakers able to claim another win. Mercyhurst moved to 6-2-2 on the year thanks to Teagan Mehalko's second-half goal, wining 1-0.
How It Happened
The game proved to be even in the early going with the score holding at 0-0 through the first 25 minutes of action. Neither team was able to grab the momentum and get off to a fast start, but Daemen proved to be the more aggressive team out of the gates. The Wildcats got four shots off in the opening 25 minutes and applied as much pressure as they could, but it did not lead to a score on the board as the two teams continued to see the first canto wind down without a score.
The remainder of the first half followed suit with the score holding at 0-0 as both teams went to the locker room. Daemen's trend of being the aggressor continued through the rest of the stanza with them finishing the opening half with eight shots to Mercyhurst's two.
The Lakers came out of the gates in the second half as the more determined team half with them able to find the scoreboard early in the canto. It was Teagan Mehalko who helped give Mercyhurst the lead with the goal, getting her first of the season. Alyssa Poleski brought the ball up the field and crossed it into the box with Mehalko able to get her left foot on it before lofting the ball over Daemen's goalie to give Mercyhurst a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute.
Mehalko's goal proved to be the only one of the game as the Laker's defense held firm in the final 30 minutes of action. Mercyhurst tightened the screws down the stretch with them looking to hold onto their one-goal advantage. Their strategy ended up yielding results as the Wildcats fired off only four shots in the final 45 as the Lakers kept the ball away from the goal and continually kept their counterpart's attacks from getting past midfield.
By the Numbers
Mercyhurst recorded their fourth shutout of the year in the 1-0 win to keep even with last year's pace of 10 for the season and to help them move into second place in the PSAC in shutouts. Goalkeeper Maddie Elbro saw her goals per game average fall as she has given up just eight scores in 10 games for .800 average, putting her in fifth place in the conference.
What's Next
It is a quick turnaround for the Lakers as they are set to play again on Friday, September 30th. In that contest, they will see Clarion at home to wrap up the month of September with kick-off set for 4:00 p.m.
