Fast Five: Women's Soccer Looking To Build Winning Streak

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer continue their season with two games this week. They take on their Erie rivals – Gannon on Wednesday, September 21st. They travel to Indiana on Saturday, September 24th to play IUP.
 
PSAC West
The Lakers are currently at the top of PSAC West Standings with conference record of 5-0-1. They are followed by their Wednesday opponent Gannon with 3-0-2 record. UPJ is third with 3-1-1 this season. Mercyhurst has lost one game so far this season against non-conference opponent – Bloomsburg.
 
History Lesson
The matchup with Gannon is set to be a great challenge for the Lakers. Despite the goal by Amber Thomas, they lost their last game against in October 2021 by a score of 3-1. The Lakers are looking for revenge and another PSAC win.
 
Mercyhurst won their last three games against IUP. In the last matchup the Lakers won by a score of 2-0 by goals scored by Emily Mijares and Dani Hartman. Madison Hoover recorded two assists in that game.
 
Team Success In Numbers
In seven games played this season, the Lakers scored 12 goals. They have taken 112 shots for an average on 16 shots per game, with 54% of the shots on target. The Lakers' defense only allowed six shots per game. Mercyhurst drew 37 corner kicks, and many of them turned into scoring situations.
 
Individual Performance
Karah Van Horn dominated last week's competition, as she scored a goal against Seton Hill and followed that with two goals against Cal (PA), receiving the PSAC West Athlete of the Week for her stellar performance on the field. Emily Mijares scored three goals so far this season, and Dani Hartman recorded two. Maddie Elbro have been spectacular in the goal for the Lakers. She has 19 saves and her leadership on defense is the key on that side of the pitch.
 
Scouting The Opponents
Gannon is a well-balanced team with a lot of fire power. As many as seven players scored at least one goal on Gannon's team this season. Ella Fadale and Sarah Fails lead the Golden Knights with three goals and one assist.
 
IUP is currently at the fifth spot in PSAC West Standings with 1-1-3 record, as they are still trying to find their identity as a team. They struggle on offense as they only scored five goals this season. Kristen Finnerty is their best scorer with two goals and one assist.
 
The Lakers host Gannon this Wednesday, September 21st at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm. They are set to play IUP on Saturday, September 24th at 1:00 pm.
