Men's Soccer Wins Their First Conference Game Against Cal (PA)

Erie, Pa - The 12th ranked Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team recorded a decisive victory to open PSAC West play. After an action-packed game the Lakers defeated Cal (PA), by a score of 5-0.

How It Happened
The Lakers entered their first conference game with a lot of energy, as they dominated the match since the kick-off. It only took four minutes for Nic Münch to put the ball in net. He received a pass from middle of the box and beat the Vulcans' goalkeeper with a shot to the left. The goal was assisted by Dylan Sumner and put Mercyhurst in the lead.

Mercyhurst kept applying pressure with well-organized team effort and aggressive offense. Their efforts paid off in 34th minute of the match, as Guilherme de Lima Cunha beat his defender and scored the second goal of the game, and his second of the season. Mercyhurst kept pushing but the first half ended with a score of 2-0.

After a dominating first half the Lakers didn't slow down in the second half. In the 51st minute of the match Sean Kerrigan managed to beat the Vulcan's goalkeeper with a nice shot to the right.

The Lakers struck again ten minutes later when a cross ball from Alfred Kajlov found Tom Barry open, who managed to put the ball in the net. It was his second goal of the season.

Thanks to multiple substitutions the Lakers still had some gas left in the tank, as they kept creating scoring opportunities. In 71st minute of the match Ryan Lieser rebounded the ball and scored his first goal of the season. Mercyhurst kept the pressure on but couldn't extend their lead, but the game ended with a score of 5-0.

By The Numbers
The Lakers controlled the game from the beginning to the end. They recorded 22 shots and 15 of them were on target. Thanks to a great defensive effort Cal (PA) only took five shots throughout the entire game. Jonathan Gomes had three saves and recorded his fifth clean sheet of the season.

What's Next
Mercyhurst is scheduled to take on Seton Hill on Wednesday, September 21st. The game will take place on the Mercyhurst Soccer Field at 1:00 pm.
