Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer got off to a hot start in their midweek matchup with the Giffins, helping lift the Lakers to a 3-2 win over Seton Hill.
How It Happened
The match started with a lot of back-and-forth action with both teams working hard for every ball; despite the game being physical, few fouls were called in the early going to help set the tone for the full 90 minutes.
The Lakers' efforts paid off in 34
th minute of the match. After a great pass by
Madison Hoover,
Dani Hartman kicked the ball to beat Seton Hill's goalkeeper, and put Mercyhurst in the lead 1-0.
Lauren Casey gave the Lakers their second goal of the game as Mercyhurst stayed on the attack. Just three minutes after firing the opening salvo, the Lakers managed to move out their lead to multiple goals on a beautiful move by the graduate student with her splitting the defense.
Even though the Griffins created couple good scoring opportunities, they couldn't beat
Maddie Elbro, so the Lakers finished first half with 2-0 lead.
Seton Hill came out determined to score in the second half, but they were to be denied in the early going of the second canto. In 67
th minute of the match
Karah Van Horn got the ball on the right side and kept dribbling through defenders and passed the ball inside. Her pass ended up being deflected by a Griffin defender before finding the back of SHU's goal to give Mercyhurst a 3-0 lead in the 67
th minute.
The Griffins didn't give up. In 84
th minute of the match Alianna Resch scored a goal, giving her team a bit of hope. Her goal was followed couple minutes later by another one, scored by Kathryn Penman. The Lakers prevailed, though, and were able to hold on and win the game.
