California, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer defeated Cal (PA), by a score of 2-0. Earning their fifth win of the season and extending their winning streak against the Vulcans to six.
How It Happened
The match started with a lot of back and forth play from both teams. In 11th minute of the game Emily Mijares tried her luck in beating California's goalkeeper, but her shot missed to the right.
In 24th minute, Lauren Casey had a good scoring opportunity; however, she missed her shot wide to the right. The Lakers kept applying pressure as Cal (PA) was often forced to foul to stop the Mercyhurst squad.
The Lakers efforts finally paid off in the 33rd minute of the match, as Karah Van Horn received the pass from Sydney Snyder, beat her defender, and put the ball in the net. The Lakers didn't repeat that achievement in the first half, as they went to the locker room with 1-0 lead.
Mercyhurst didn't slow down in the second half of the match, as they kept dominating on both sides of the pitch. In the 65th minute Dani Hartman took a nice shot, but it was saved by the Vulcan's goalkeeper.
With 13 minutes left on the clock, Van Horn doubled the Laker lead, as she scored another goal. She broke away from the defense and put the ball in the goal for the second time in the game. That was her fifth goal of the season.
The Lakers held on to a comfortable lead and defeated Cal (PA) by a score of 2-0.

The Lakers dominated most of the game, they took 15 shots and seven of them on target. The Mercyhurst defense did a spectacular job as Cal (PA) only took six shots and two of them on goal. Mercyhurst drew four corner kicks, whereas the Vulcans only drew one. Maddie Elbro had two saves and finished with another clean sheet, her third of the season.

Mercyhurst returns home for a rivalry match against Gannon on Wednesday, September 21st. Kick-off is scheduled for 4:00 pm at Mercyhurst Soccer Field.
