Men's Soccer Defeats Daemen To Finish Non-Conference Play

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Men's Soccer defeated Daemen University by a score of 1-0, after intense match under the lights at Saxon Stadium. The 12th ranked Lakers finished the non-conference part of their season and look ready for PSAC West play.
 
How It Happened
The Lakers kept pushing the ball from the first minute of the match, applying pressure and creating scoring opportunities. They kept forcing Daemen to play defense for prolonged periods of time.
 
In the 16th minute of the game Dylan Sumner danced through his defenders with a move to the left and took a shot to the right corner. The shot didn't surprise Daemen's goalkeeper, and he saved it.
 
In the 18th minute of the game, Nic Munch passed right behind Daemen's defensive line but a shot by Lockie Fay was saved.
 
The Lakers kept applying pressure but despite their domination they were unsuccessful. They took 12 shots it the first half alone, and five of them were on target. The first 45 minutes ended with a tie.
 
Mercyhurst was active in the second half. After multiple tries, they efforts finally paid off. In 73rd minute of the match Sumner beat his defenders with sensational dribble move and scored the goal with a shot to the left.


 
Inspired by electric atmosphere in the stadium Mercyhurst kept striving to extend the lead. With couple minutes on the clock Sumner took another great shot, but it bounced off the crossbar. Despite great efforts the game ended with a score of 1-0.
 
By The Numbers
The Lakers dominated most of the game, they took 24 shots and nine of them on target. Daemen only took three and two of them on goal. Mercyhurst drew seven corner kicks and many of them turned into scoring opportunities for the Lakers. Jonathan Gomes finished the game with two saves and another clean sheet this season.
 
What's Next
The Lakers start PSAC play this Saturday, September 17th. They are scheduled to travel to California, PA for the game against the Vulcans. Kick-off is scheduled for 3:30 PM.
