WILMINGTON, DE – The Mercyhurst Men's Soccer team won in the season opener against Goldey-Beacom by a score of 5-1.
How it happened
The first couple minutes saw a lot of back-and-forth play from both teams. With 25 minutes left in the first half the Lakers had a good opportunity to score. After a foul outside the penalty
Dylan Sumner closely missed a free kick.
Mercyhurst kept applying pressure, the last minutes of the first half were full of action. With 15 minutes left on the clock,
Nic Münch beat the Lightning goalkeeper with an amazing shot.
Ryan Lieser picked up his first point of the season with an assist.
A couple minutes after that, Goldey-Beacom answered with the goal of their own. Tumi Sekhampu scored after a long pass by Patrick Stolze. The Lakers answered back before the half. With 5 minutes left
Sean Kerrigan lost his defender with a move to the right and scored the goal, putting Mercyhurst in the 2-1 lead.
The Lakers kept on rolling in the second half. In 51
st minute of the match
Jorge Tallada Torres scored with a beautiful scissor kick. The goal was assisted by Lieser, giving him his second assist of the game.
Ten minutes later the Lakers struck again. Kerrigan impressed everybody with a ground shot to beat Goldey-Beacon's goalkeeper for the fourth time in the game, his second of the game. The Lakers scored once more time.
Axel Aronsson netted his first of the season. Kerrigan notched an assist on the play.
By the Numbers
The Lakers dominated on both sides of the pitch. Goldey-Beacom's players often had to foul to stop a play. They had two yellow cards and nine fouls in the first half alone. The Lakers took 17 shots, whereas their opponents only took 7.
