Baseball Uses Complete Game from Heilman, Late Home Run from Susnik to Advance in PSAC Tournament

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Jarrett Heilman escaped out of a bases loaded jam in the first inning by giving up his only run in nine innings to help propel the Mercyhurst University Baseball Team into the winners bracket at the PSAC Tournament on Thursday afternoon as the team was victorious over East Stroudsburg by a 3-1 margin.

The Warriors only run came in the top of the first inning when Anthony Torreullas roped a high drive down the right field line with the bases loaded that brought in the tagging runner from third. The Lakers right fielder Luke Jackson made a nice play to track down the ball and relayed it into Casimer Sobaszek who threw out the Warrior base runner who was on second, trying to get home on the sac fly.

From there Heilman would settle in and go the distance without letting up another ESU run. He finished the game with nine strikeouts, improving his sophomore season record to a flawless 8-0.

Jack Elliott tied the game for the Lakers in the bottom of the third when he roped a line drive up and over the right field wall to put the score at 1-1. Then in the bottom of the seventh, John Susnik delivered a go-ahead two run homer over the left center field wall which would bring home Matt Gibson. Heilman proceeded to strike out the side in the 8th inning before getting three Warrior batters to fly out in the ninth.

The Lakers will now square off with the top seed out of East Millersville tomorrow in the winners bracket. The opening pitch is set for 11:00 a.m.
