Baseball Knocked out of PSAC Tournament After Losses to Millersville and East Stroudsburg

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Baseball Team dropped two contests in the PSAC Tournament this afternoon, knocking them out of the bracket. The Lakers began the day with a 6-1 loss to top seeded East Stroudsburg before dropping an elimination game to East Stroudsburg by a 5-0 score.

Game One

In the first game of the day, The Marauders scored the first run of the contest when Luke Trainer grounded out deep to second base resulting in the runner on third being able to score as Millersville went up 1-0.

John Susnik tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when he blasted a solo shot in his first at bat since yesterday's go-ahead two-run home run against East Stroudsburg. John Bufford Jr. settled down after giving up a run in the first as he proceeded to hold Millersville scoreless in the second and third innings. He faced a bases loaded jam in the top of the fourth, ultimately giving up a three RBI single to left field after Matthew Gibson barely missed on a diving attempt. The hit gave the Marauders a 4-1 lead which they would hold until the sixth inning when they added an insurance run on a ground out to the Lakers Casimer Sobaszek at shortstop.

Millersville tacked on an additional insurance run in the top of the seventh inning when Thomas Caufi doubled to bring home Bren Taylor. Sobaszek and Gibson each registered two hits a piece while Bufford Jr. finished the game with eight strikeouts in four innings of work. The loss sent the Lakers to an elimination game with the Warriors of East Stroudsburg.

Game Two

Their second time playing the Lakers in as many days resulted in a different outcome for East Stroudsburg, holding the Lakers scoreless in the elimination game and taking a 5-0 victory. The Warriors used a combination of five different pitchers to shutout the Lakers including Nate Fiola, who went 1.2 innings with two strikeouts on his way to picking up the win. Nathan Holt got the start and pitched well for the Lakers. He went seven complete innings, only giving up two earned runs to go with six strikeouts. He gave up a sac fly in the first inning before a throwing error in the fourth inning which gave East Stroudsburg a 2-0 at the time.

The Warriors other three runs came in the eight inning of a Anthoney Toreullas Two RBI double and a Jack Rothenhausler RBI single. The Lakers did manage to record five hits of the Warriors including two from Luke Jackson.

They will now wait to see if their name will be called in Sunday night's NCAA Division II Selection Show which will begin at 10 p.m.
