FRESNO, Ca. – The Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo team dropped a 15-6 contest on Saturday afternoon during the second day of action from the WWPA Championships. The Lakers will now match up with Gannon tomorrow in the 7th place match.
Mercyhurst's Sara Marin scored the first goal of the contest just over a minute into the first quarter to give the green and white an early 1-0 lead. The Otters responded with back-to-back strikes before Sakura Gavin brought the Lakers back to even with a score at the 2:27 mark of the quarter.
CSMB then proceeded to go on a 5-0 scoring run that spanned until late in the second quarter. They used two late goals in the first quarter followed by three more to start the second to jump out to a 7-2 lead.
Hanna Good registered her first score of the game with 1:18 remaining in the first half, but the Otters scored two goals late in the period again as they brought a 9-3 advantage with them in the halftime break.
Rachel Vlietstra brought the Laker deficit back down to five when she scored to open up the third quarter, however CSMB would go on to score three goals in a row to close out the quarter on top 12-4.
In the final quarter the Otters outscore the Lakers 3-2 to win and advance to tomorrow's fifth place game. Gavin and
Grace Brzyski would score the two Laker goals.
