FRESNO, Ca. – The Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo team dropped their seventh place matchup at the WWPA Championships against Gannon on Sunday afternoon in Fresno California.
The first quarter produced nine goals with the Golden Knights having outscored the Lakers 5-4 in the opening eight minutes of action. Gannon started scoring with the first two goals of the match before Sakura Gavin scored the first goal for the Lakers at the 5:26 mark of the quarter. The Lakers tied the game at three after strikes from Hanna Good and Allie Dombkowski. Gavin registered the final Laker goal of the quarter with 24 seconds remaining in the quarter.
In the second quarter the Golden Knights extended their lead to three by the halftime break. Good and Gavin scored in between a Gannon goal as the Golden Knights went into halftime up 9-6.
No goals were scored in the third quarter and the Golden Knights extended their lead to five after scoring the first two tallies in the fourth quarter. Two late scores from the Lakers
Rachel Vlietstra brought the Lakers back to within three tallies before the final horn sounded with the score reading 11-8 Gannon.
