Men’s Lacrosse Captures 17-9 Victory Over Chestnut Hill

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Mercyhurst Men's Lacrosse team claimed a 17-9 victory on the road Saturday afternoon against Chestnut Hill College. Bryce Johnson led the Lakers with 11 points on five goals to go along with six assists.

Six different Lakers scored during the first period as the Lakers jumped out to an early 7-1 lead after 15 minutes of action. David Fiorini got things started for the green and white just eight seconds after the opening draw. From there the Lakers would receive goals from Johnson and Ethan Landymore to take an early 3-0 lead. After the Griffins first tally of the game at the 8:22 mark, Nicholas Mabe, Colin Schmatz and Johnson added scores for the Lakers to round out the quarter.

Chestnut Hill did score the first goal of the second quarter on a man up advantage before the Lakers rattled off a 4-0 scoring run that lasted through the remainder of the quarter with two goals coming from Landymore with Myles Hamm and Mabe adding the other two to give Mercyhurst an 11-2 lead at the halftime break.

The Griffins made a push in the third quarter, however it ultimately ended with them splitting six goals evenly with the Lakers as Mercyhurst remained on top 14-5 after 45 minutes of play. The goals were Hamm's second and Johnson's third and fourth goals of the game.

In the last quarter of play the Lakers would receive one goal a piece from Landymore, Hamm, and Johnson to conclude scoring for Mercyhurst. The Griffins did manage to outscore the Lakers in the fourth, but it was too little too late.

Brett Olney earned his fifth win of the season in the net for the Lakers. He stopped 11 of the 20 Griffin shots that were placed on goal. Stephen Katz led the team with 3 caused turnovers and Shawn Doran recorded wins on 18 of his 24 faceoff chances to go along with 12 ground balls.

The Lakers will be back in action next Saturday at No. 5 Mercy in what will most likely be the Lakers third matchup this season against a top-10 nationally ranked opponent, game time is slated for noon.
