Utica, N.Y.—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team fell to AIC in the Atlantic Hockey Semifinals on Friday evening by a score of 5-4.
How it Happened
In the opening period the Lakers were outshot 13-4 but the Lakers held a 1-0 lead. Dante Sheriff took advantage of an AIC turnover deep in their zone to put the Lakers up 1-0 at the 12:32 mark of the opening period.
The second period consisted of four goals as both teams scored twice. AIC scored the first two goals of the period before the Lakers answered with two of their own.
Austin Heidemann scored on a deflected Devon Daniels shot as the AIC netminder was caught well out of position. It was a tie game at the 11:29 mark of the middle frame.
Just under two minutes later Rylee St. Onge scored on the power play as Josh McDougall added an assist on the play to give the Lakers the 3-2 lead with less than six minutes left in the second period.
Through two periods Kyle McClellan had 28 saves.
In the third, AIC scored three straight goals including an empty netter to make it 5-3.
Mercyhurst showed no quit as they made it a one goal game with 1:20 remaining in regulation. St. Onge got his second of the game while Mickey Burns an assist on the play.
McClellan made 44 saves in the game, it was his tenth game this season in which he made 40 plus saves in a game this season.
