Upson Pushes Women’s Hockey Past RIT in OT

ERIE, Pa – The Mercyhurst women's ice hockey team completed the series sweep of the visiting RIT Tigers on Saturday afternoon courtesy of an overtime winner by Vanessa Upson. The Lakers had a season-high 58 shots in the win.

After the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening period, it was RIT who struck first just over halfway through the second period when Athena Vasdani snuck one past Mercyhurst's Jenna Silvonen. However, the Lakers responded quickly as it was Chantal Ste-Croix picking up her third goal of the series nearly four minutes later to notch things back at 1-1.

In the third period, Mercyhurst's Sara Boucher scored on a shot that went in between the legs of the Tiger netminder at the 8:36 mark to give the Lakers their first lead of the contest. Liliane Perreault and Aubrey Cole each were credited with assists on the goal, for Cole, it was her first point of the season.

RIT did not give up their fight as the Tigers continued to push into the Mercyhurst offensive zone and it paid off when Jaymee Nolan collected a loose puck out in front of an empty Mercyhurst net and rifled the puck in with no doubt for her first goal of the season tying the game at 2-2 with just four minutes remaining in the third period.

After a scoreless rest of regulation, the teams would go on to a 3v3 overtime period that saw the freshman Upson score her 18th goal of the season to seal it for the Lakers. Mercyhurst went on to outshoot RIT 58-21, Silvonen earned the win in between the pipes to improve her season record to 8-4-2.

The Lakers will close out their regular season at home next weekend when they welcome the Syracuse Orange into town, puck drop for Friday's opener is slated for 3:05 p.m.
