Women’s Hockey Snap Two Game Skid, Defeats RIT 5-1

ERIE, Pa – The Mercyhurst Women's hockey team snapped their two-game losing skid on Friday evening against the visiting RIT Tigers by a 5-1 scoreline. A total of eight Mercyhurst skaters got their names into the scoresheet as it was Chantal Ste-Croix who led the way with two goals.

The Lakers pounced into action early, scoring just 33 seconds into the opening period when Sara Boucher took a back-handed shot that found the net to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. Mercyhurst would go on to score one more time in the period, this time with 33 seconds left on the clock as Chantal Ste-Croix scored her first of two goals in the contest putting the Lakers up by two.

In the second period, the Lakers again had the puck in their offensive third for a large portion of the period shown by a 14-3 shot differential. Jordan Mortlock would begin the scoring in the period at the 14:02 mark when the defenseman received a pass from Emily Pinto on the 3v2 break and flicked home a shot by the right shoulder of the RIT netminder. Freshman Vanessa Upson stuck next for the Lakers, scoring her Freshmen leading 17th goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Jersey Phillips, her second of the season.

Ste-Croix finished off the Laker scoring late in the second period when she re-directed a puck in front of the net shot by Marielle Parks. The goal marked the second time this season that Ste-Croix has had multi-goal performances. RIT scored their only goal of the contest four minutes into the third period.

The Lakers ended up outshooting the Tigers 42-11, K.K Thiessen ended the contest with two assists while Ena Nystrøm saved 10 shots in goal to secure her tenth win of the season. The Lakers will finish off their series with RIT tomorrow, opening puck drop is set for just after 2 o'clock.
