Baseball Closes Out Opening Weekend With Blowout Win

Morgantown, W.Va.—Mercyhurst Baseball closed out opening weekend with a commanding 19-6 win over Alderson Broaddus.

How it Happened

After a scoreless first inning, Luke Jackson started the top of the second inning with a single. Michael Ferl walked to put runners on first and second with no outs. After two strikeouts, Landon DiBeradin walked to load the bases with two outs. Matthew Gibson tripled and cleared bases to give the Lakers a 3-0 lead.

Mercyhurst expanded their lead in the top of the fourth inning. Aiden Shephard, Korey Shoupe and DiBeradin walked, Shephard scored to make it 4-0 while Gibson walked. After another walk and an error the Lakers had a 6-0 lead. Later in the inning Jackson singled home that brought Troy Banks and Casmier Sobaszek home. The Lakes went on to a 10 spot up in the fourth inning as DeBeradin and Logan Martella-Tasick both drove in two runs in the frame.

AB scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to make it 13-2.

The Laker bats produced two more runs in the top of the sixth. Martella-Tasick drove in Shoupe while Surowiec was hit by a pitch that brought Martella-Tasick home for the 15th Laker run.

The Rattlers scored twice in the bottom half of the sixth and after six innings the score was 15-4.

DiBeradin drove in his third run of his collegiate debut in the seventh inning.

Ryan Perretti drove in the Laker's 18th run in the eighth inning while Mitchell Grosch homered in the ninth inning to make it 19-4.

On The Bump

Jarrett Heilman got the ball to start the game and went four scoreless innings allowing just two hits while punching out five. Matt Shepard made his NCAA pitching debut and struckout three in his inning of work.

Ben Berdine took over for Shepard and faced 10 batters in his collegiate debut over two innings. He struckout four while giving up three hits.

In the eighth inning Corbin Foy pitched a scoreless inning needing just 12 pitches to strikeout two and get a flyout. Spencer Curran made Laker debut and notched his first strikeout of the season while allowing one hit.

Up Next

The Lakers finished opening weekend with a 2-1 record. Mercyhurst is back in action next weekend as they head back to West Virginia to take on Wheeling on Friday and Salem on Saturday.
