Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Water Polo team dropped a pair of home contests to Villanova and Siena as they hosted day one of the inaugural Curtis Robinette Memorial Invite Saturday.
Against Villanova
After the Wildcats raced out to a 5-1 lead in the first period, Hanna Good scored for Mercyhurst in the final minute and the Lakers kept the game close at 8-5 until the final second of the half. Just before the halftime horn, Emily Morrissey scored for Villanova to make it 9-5.
Mercyhurst outscored Villanova 4-3 in the third period thanks to goals from Allie Dombrowski, Sara Marin (2) and Brean Jordan. That brought the score to 12-9 with eight minutes left to play.
The Lakers would not get closer than three goals as the teams traded scores in the fourth, and Villanova added an extra at the end to bring the final score to 15-11.
Marin and Sakura Gavin led the Lakers with three goals each, and Gavin added an assist for a team-high four points. Hannah Engquist, Alexa Anderberg and Phoebe Saunders also helped lead the defensive effort as they posted two steals each.
Against Siena
The Saints controlled the game from the outset, taking a 5-0 lead into the second period. Ava Gebhardt got the Lakers on the scoreboard in the second period, and Dombrowski followed with another one minute later to cut the Siena lead to 6-2.
After another Saints goal, Marin and Good both found the net to cut the lead down to 7-4. Siena scored the next five goals between the end of the first half and the beginning of the third period to take a 12-4 lead.
Gebhardt would add four more goals in the second half, but the Saints ran away with the game and won 20-10.
Saunders had three assists in the effort, while Marin had another multi-goal game with two.

The Curtis Robinette Memorial Invite will continue into Sunday, with the Lakers taking on Mount St. Mary's for the second time this season at 12:45 p.m.
