Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team started the final homestand of the regular season by hosting the RIT Tigers. Mercyhurst scored the lone goal of the game and won 1-0.
How it Happened
The first period was a back-and-forth period that saw the Lakers notch nine shots on goal while Kyle McClellan made 13 saves in the opening 20 minutes. In the opening frame the Lakers were unsuccessful on their lone power play while they killed off both RIT power plays.
The second period started like the opening period, however at the 8:10 mark the Lakers took advantage of a RIT penalty. Dante Sheriff and Pierce Crawford added assists on Townend's fifth of the year.
Both teams tallied 11 shots in the second period and brought the totals to 24 for RIT and 20 for Mercyhurst.
The third period was just like the first two periods full of back and fourth play. The Lakers were accessed a five minute major penalty at the 4:41 mark of the third period. Mercyhurst killed off the penalty and allowed just three shots in the five minutes.
Despite outshooting the Lakers 34-28 the Tigers could not beat the red hot goaltender in net for the Lakers. McClellan made 34 saves and earned his second straight Friday night shutout.
