UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team wrapped up the series with Penn State at 1 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 5.
The Lakers came out on top with a score of 3-1.
Breaking Down the Game
First Period
Ena Nystrøm returned to the net for the second tilt against Penn State.
Tessa Janecke found herself taking the first faceoff of the game. It went to Penn State.
Within the first two minutes, the Lakers took three shots on net.
With 7:28 off the clock, the Lakers earned themselves a power play. Roughing was called on the Nittany Lions. The Lakers earned six shots on net during the PP.
The puck stayed neutral as both teams kept earning shots on net.
At 2:55 left in the period the Nittany Lions claimed another penalty. This time for interference. The Lakers used this to their advantage and shot three more times at the net.
Ena Nystrøm found herself stopping 13 shots on goal. Jordan Mortlock and Makayla Javier went in front of the puck twice to block shots.
Second Period
Vanessa Upson took the first faceoff of the second. It worked out in favor of the Lakers.
With 1:23 gone in the period, Kylee Mahoney was sent to the box on a 2 minute minor for tripping. Ena Nystrøm made major saves, and the Lakers killed the penalty.
As the puck went into neutral ice for a few minutes, another penalty was called on the Nittany Lions with 15:36 left in the period. It was a minor for tripping that allowed the Lakers to enter another power play.
It was quickly back to even strength as Chantal Ste-Croix entered the box at 15:05 for tripping. Both teams played out the penalty, and quickly were back at even strength.
With 7:27 gone in the period, Sydney Pedersen dumped the puck in the net to give the Lakers the advantage. Chantal Ste-Croix and Marielle Parks tallied the assists.
14:01 elapsed in the period, and the Lakers had too many players on the ice. The Nittany Lions entered a power play. Moments later with 14:53 gone, Sydney Pedersen was also in the box for roughing.
The Nittany Lions took the three on five to their advantage and scored with 4:18 left in the period. The game was now 1-1.
Sydney Pedersen entered the game to bring the Lakers back to full strength.
Ena Nystrøm had 11 saves this period, while the team now had 15 shots on goal.
Third Period
Early in the period, Thea Johansson, Sami Gendron, and Jordan Mortlock all had attempts at the net.
The puck kept going back and forth throughout the midst of the period with no penalties or goals.
The Lakers broke that streak at 8:21. Thea Johansson sank a puck into the goal to take the lead, 2-1. Vanessa Upson claimed the solo assist.
Penn State pulled their goalie with 18:29 off the clock to try to even up the score.
With an empty net, Sara Boucher scored. There was 1:08 left in the game.
The Nittany Lions tried to come back but were unsuccessful.
