Men's Hockey Forces Overtime Against Sacred Heart

ERIE, Pa. - The Mercyhurst University Men's Hockey team finished their series against Sacred Heart tonight, Nov. 5. 

The game went into a shootout with four rounds. The Pioneers came out with the advantage.

Breaking Down the Game

First Period

The first period started slowly with both teams taking shots on net. 

When 15:59 minutes elapsed, the Lakers saw a scoring opportunity and followed through. It was Joseph Maziarz with the goal and Rylee St. Onge and Carson Briere with the assists. 

With 2:47 remaining, Philip Waugh went to the box for interference. The Lakers answered and killed the penalty.

The Lakers wrapped up the first with 11 shots on goal. Tyler Harmon made eight saves.

Second Period

The second period saw lots of action. 

With 2:36 off the clock, Owen Norton had a cross-checking call on him. Sacred Heart used this to their advantage and scored. The time of the goal was 17:12. 

Not even two minutes later, at a time of 15:18, the Pioneers scored another. The game was now 1-2.

As the Lakers tried to retaliate, a penalty was called on SHU for interference. The call happened at 8:59 elapsed. The Lakers were able to place two shots on net through the power play. 

A goal was scored by the Pioneers at 4:18 to widen the score to 1-3.

The period was about to end, but Keanan Stewart used the time to his advantage and scored with 2.8 seconds remaining. Mickey Burns tallied the assist.

Third Period

The opening faceoff was in favor of Mercyhurst, and the puck stayed neutral up until the 6:52 mark. SHU was sent to the box for high sticking. The Lakers capitalized and took three shots on net. 

Shortly after the power play ended, Kyler Head lit the lamp with 1:41 left in the third. Eric Esposito and Adrien Bisson assisted with the point. The game was now a tie.

Overtime

Carson Briere started by winning the faceoff. 

The Pioneers had the advantage of shooting on net nine times, but Tyler Harmon did not let anything past him.

The five minutes wrapped up, and it was time for a shootout. 

Steven Agriogianis made the first goal for the Lakers giving them the advantage. 

The Pioneers scored in round two to tie it up. 

No goals were scored in the third, but the Pioneers claimed the shootout win in the fourth round.

Steven Agriogianis and Adrien Bisson were both +2 on the night. 

Steven Agriogianis won 16 faceoffs. 

Tyler Harmon made 25 saves.
