Friday Afternoon Action at Penn State

University Park, Pa. - The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team took to the rink this afternoon at Penn State. 

The Lakers fell to the Nittany Lions 1-4. 
 

Breaking Down the Game

First Period

The Lakers had Ena Nystrøm starting in goal tonight, with the opening faceoff in favor of Mercyhurst. 

Vanessa Upson earned a penalty for interference at 10:33 on the clock.

With 12:18 minutes elapsed in the game, Liliane Perreault dumped it into the net for a goal. Makayla Javier tallied the assist. A video review of the goal was prompted, but the call on the ice stood and it was a Laker goal.

The puck stayed in neural ice for a while, and both teams earned shots on goal. 

With 5:19 left in the first, Penn State responded to the first goal and found the puck deep in the net. 

Late into the first, the Lakers were tenacious and kept taking shots on goal. 

Penn State grabbed the lead with less than three minutes left in the period.

The period wrapped up with a score of 1-2. The Lakers had nine shots on goal and Ena Nystrøm faced 13 shots on the net. She had a .846 save percentage in the period. 

Second Period

With the second period underway, the Lakers won the faceoff. Ena Nystrøm followed by stopping three shots on the net from the Nittany Lions. 

At 16:56 left on the clock, the Lakers earned a power play. They tallied four shots on goal through the two minutes. 

Mary Kromer had a call for tripping, which allowed Penn State to snag a Power Play goal. The goal happened with 6:45 minutes elapsed. 

The puck continued to fly on neutral ice and a Media timeout was called at 10:25. The Lakers used this break to regroup and won the faceoff. 

Following an icing call, Jordan Mortlock was sent to the box for checking at 8:44. The puck stayed in neutral ice for the most part and the Lakers killed the penalty. 

Each team had major chances to score late in the second. Ena Nystrøm made an impressive save with 13:56 elapsed on the clock.

The Nittany Lions weaseled their way to 1-4 with a late second-period goal.

The Lakers could not bounce back and still trailed with one period remaining. The team took eight shots on the net during this period.

Third Period

The Lakers were three for three on opening-period faceoffs. Shortly after, an offside call forced a faceoff in neutral ice. Mercyhurst also took this one. 

As time went on, many shots were taken by both teams. With the clock at 10:27, Mary Kromer attempted to dump one in the net but was quickly stopped. 

A media timeout was called at 9:57 on the clock. The Lakers won the following faceoff. 

12:25 elapsed, and Alexandria Weiss found herself in front of the puck for a block. 

The third period was a scoreless period, with the Lakers grabbing five shots on goal and the Nittany Lions 11.

Notable Stats

Liliane Perreault opened up with the first goal of the game. 

The Lakers collectively blocked nine shots with Sara Boucher and Sydney Pedersen each tallying two.
