Volleyball Secures First Conference Victory in Comeback Fashion

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Volleyball team collected their first conference win of the season on Saturday afternoon against Pitt-Johnstown. The Lakers won in comeback fashion after dropping the first set to take the victory in four.

How it Happened

Set one began with a convincing performance from the Mountain Cats as they took a 6-1 lead over the Lakers. Mercyhurst tried to fight back with two kills from Kylie Schnars, but two long runs from UPJ put them on top for the first set 25-16.

The start of set two seemed to bring more of the same as UPJ went up 6-0 on the Lakers; however, an ace from Alia Mastramatteo and kills from Maggie Thomas and Corinne Bechtold tied things at nine. The Lakers ended set two in dominate fashion scoring 11 of the last 12 points highlighted by three services aces from Zoe Gadomski. Mercyhurst took the second set 25-17.

UPJ started things off hot again in set three by taking a four-point lead. The Lakers roared back with a set dump and two aces from Alexa Mitchell putting them up 12-9. After going up, the Lakers maintained their advantage for the rest of the game sealing the win on two kills from Schnars.

Set four saw the Mercyhurst offense shine early with kills from Schnars, Murphy, and Thomas while multiple errors from the Mountain Cats helped the Lakers over the finish line taking the final set 25-19.

By the Numbers

Schnars was the top scorer for the Lakers with 18 kills followed by Bechtold with seven. Thomas posted four blocks and Mitchell set the table 32 times. The Lakers posted a season high 13 services aces.
