Women's Hockey Beats No. 10 Clarkson in Overtime

Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey team faced No. 10 Clarkson for the second straight day at the Mercyhurst Ice Center. Mercyhurst came away with the upset win as they won in overtime 2-1.

How it Happened

In the first period the teams played a back and forth game with neither team generated many great scoring chance. Neither team scored in the opening 20 minutes but the Lakers outshot the Golden Knights 8-6.

Just over two minutes into the second period the Lakers struck first. After scoring last night Chantal Ste-Croix scored her third of the season. Vanessa Upson flipped a long pass to Thea Johansson and her and Ste-Croix went 2 on 1 with the goalie. Johansson passed it across to Ste-Croix and she hammered it home to take the lead.

After 40 minutes of play the Lakers led 1-0 while shots were 19-19. Mercyhurst also won 17 of 28 faceoffs in the first two periods.

In the third period, it was Clarkson's turn to score an early goal. Just 1:56 into the period Clarkson forced a turnover deep in the Mercyhurst zone. The Golden Knights took a bad angle shot that found it's way into the net.

After 60 minutes of play the teams solved nothing as the teams were tied 1-1 at the end of regulation. Clarkson led 29-26 in shots at the end of the third.

The overtime period started with Clarkson winning the opening faceoff and controlling the puck, they generated one shot. About 45 seconds into the extra period, the Lakers forced a Golden Knight turnover. Johansson had the puck in her own corner and fed a saucer pass to Sydney Pedersen. Pedersen took the puck in alone on the netminder and sniped it glove side on the goalie.

By the Numbers

Jada Brenon made her second start of the season and made 29 saves, her goals against average this season is now 0.41 and her save percentage is .985 both of which are the best in the CHA. Pedersen's goal was her second game winning goal of her career (first in overtime), he last GWG came against Penn State last season. Johansson notched her second multi-point game in just six games, she has points in three of six games. It is the third time in Ste-Croix's career that she has scored in back-to-back games.
