Troy, N.Y.—The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey Team won their second straight game against an ECAC opponent as they downed the RPI Engineers 2-0 on the road.
How it Happened
In the opening period the neither the Lakers nor the Engineers scored a goal. The Lakers did control play however as they outshot RPI 12-5 in the opening period.
The second period was full of back and forth play as the Lakers once again outshot the Engineers 10-9 and had a 22-14 advantage in shots after 40 minutes of play. Despite 19 total shot the two netminders held strong as neither team scored.
After dominating the first 40 minutes of play the Lakers finally struck. On the power play Sara Boucher scored to open the scoring and make it 1-0. Liliane Perreault and Kylee Mahoney picked up assists as the Lakers took the lead at 5:23 mark of the third period.
After controlling play for the rest of the third period the Lakers were rewarded with an empty net goal. Freshman Makayla Javier scored her first career goal into the empty net to seal the game with less than 90 seconds left.
Jada Brenon made her second straight start and needed to make just 21 saves to earn her second shutout of the season.
By the Numbers
Mercyhurst tallied 33 shots on goal while also going one for four on the power play. It was the first time this season that the Lakers scored on the advantage along with their first empty net goal of the year. Javier became the third Laker this season to score her first career goal. It is also the fifth time this season the Lakers kept the opposition off the scoreboard on the power play. RPI went 0-4 on the power play.
