Men's Soccer Defeats Gannon by Four Goals

Erie, Pa – Sixth-ranked Mercyhurst Men's Soccer dominates their crosstown rival – Gannon, winning the game by a score of 4-0. The Lakers stay undefeated and strengthen their position at the top of PSAC West Standings to close out the week as they improve to 12-0-1

How It Happened

The game started with a lot of back-and-forth play as both teams played physically and players would often find themselves laying on the ground. Gannon had a couple of good scoring opportunities early in the match, but Jonathan Gomes was there to save the ball from going into the goal.

Mercyhurst applied pressure on their rival, pushing the ball forward and looking for an opening. In 19th minute of the match, Jorge Tallada Torres tried his luck with a nice shot, but it was saved by the Golden Knight's goalkeeper. A couple of minutes later Gannon's Sergio Del Castillo danced between the defenders and kicked the ball, but Gomes was right there again.

The Lakers' efforts finally paid off in 35th minute of the match as Axel Aronsson headed the ball into the net with Dylan Sumner assisting on the goal. Mercyhurst held strong the rest of the way in the opening half as they went into the halftime break ahead 1-0.

The second half of the game also started with a lot of physical play from both teams. The Lakers didn't slow down and motivated by Head Coach Ryan Osborne they kept going. In 72nd minute of the game, Lockie Fay beat Gannon's goalkeeper with a beautiful shot to the bottom right corner of the net, putting Mercyhurst ahead 2-0. About ten minutes later Sean Kerrigan danced through the defenders and got fouled inside Gannon's penalty box. He then took a penalty kick and scored his tenth goal of the season to make it 3-0.

The Lakers didn't stop there; with less than a minute on the clock, Tallada Torres received a ball from Tom Barry and put this one to bed with another goal asMercyhurst recorded another decisive victory of the season, beating Gannon by a score of 4-0.

In The Numbers

The Lakers dominated Gannon on both sides of the pitch. They took 19 shots, with 10 of them on target while Gannon fired 15 shots and 7 of them on goal. Mercyhurst did a good job capitalizing on their scoring opportunities and avoided costly mistakes on the defensive side.  Gomes recorded seven saves and another clean sheet for the 2022 season.
