Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Men's Soccer recorded another decisive victory in the non-conference matchup with Shepherd. The Lakers defeated the Rams by a score of 8-0 to help them moved to 11-0-1 on the year and grab their seventh straight shutout.
How It Happened
Mercyhurst applied pressure straight from the kick-off, forcing the Rams to play on defense for extensive periods of time. Their efforts paid off in 10
th minute of the match, as
Lockie Fay put the Lakers in the lead after a great pass by
Alfred Kajlov. The green and white struck again in 24
th minute, as
Tom Barry danced between his defenders and passed it inside to
Nic Münch who beat Shepherd's goalkeeper with a nice shot to make it 2-0.
The Lakers didn't stop there, as they scored again six minutes later. After a great pass by
Sean Kerrigan, Fay put the ball in the net for his second goal of the game and fourth of the season.
With 7 minutes left on the clock in the opening half, Mercyhurst's top goal scorer,
Sean Kerrigan, got in on the action with one of his own as the Lakers continued to pour it on to go into the half up 4-0.
The Lakers didn't slow down in the second half, as they only needed one minute to score again.
Jorge Tallada Torres beat Shepherd's goalkeeper with a nice shot to the left off the feed from M ünch. In the 62
nd minute of the match
Erik Cederberg beat his defenders and got fouled in the penalty box by Shepherd's Trey Campagna.
Tom Barry took the penalty kick and scored, putting the Lakers in a six-goal lead. Cederberg then recorded a goal of his own couple minutes later as he took a spectacular free kick to the left and left the goalkeeper no chance to reach the ball.
The Lakers scored one more time with two minutes left on the clock. Tallada Torres passed the ball inside to
Thomas Binkowski who put it in the net for his first goal of the season to make it an 8-0 count which is where the game found itself at the final buzzer.
In The Numbers
The Lakers dominated their opponents on both sides of the pitch. They took 22 shots with 14 of them on target whereas Shepherd only took four. Mercyhurst drew eight corner kicks and turned many of them into scoring situations. The Lakers capitalized on many situations scoring as many as eight goals in one game, the most in a game this season.
Jonathan Gomes recorded two saves and
Mattias Odelius had one save in the goal for the Lakers.
