Lakers Drop Five-Set Fight with Cal

Erie, Pa. – Despite great efforts, Mercyhurst Volleyball fell to Cal (Pa.) in a five-set thrill ride. After the Lakers took the first two sets, they dropped the next three in close contests with them now moving to 3-20 on the year.

How It Happened

The first set was very intense as both teams couldn't build a comfortable lead. Alexa Mitchell led the Lakers to a 15-12 lead with a nice ace before the Vulcans answered with a couple of successful plays, as they got the 20-18 lead. Thanks to a kill by Paige Miller, the Lakers came back from a slight deficit and tied the game 23-23. They were able to finish it strong and won the first set, 26-24.

The Lakers continued the game with a dominant second set. An ace from Zoe Gadomski put Mercyhurst in 16-11 leading helped give the Lakers some momentum that they would never let go of. The Vulcans couldn't come back and the Lakers sealed the deal with a kill from Kaitlin Murphy, winning it 25-19.

The Vulcans went into the third set full of energy and determination. They tried to build a lead, but the Lakers stayed right with them as Kylie Schnars had a nice kill, tying the game 13-13. Despite great Laker's effort, Cal (Pa.) won the third set 25-23.

The fourth set was very one-sided as the Vulcans defeated the Lakers 25-14. The final set was full of action, as neither team could build a lead in the early going. A block by Maggie Thomas tied the game, 6-6 while the Vulcans kept applying pressure, and a nice serve by Oliwia Suboczewska put Cal (Pa.) in the 12-10 lead. The Lakers couldn't come back and the final set ended with a score of 15-11.
