Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Football looked for their first win at home in 2022 Saturday afternoon with the Lakers unable to do so. Despite the team's best efforts, Cal (Pa.) got the win by a final of 44-20.
How it Happened
The Vulcans got the scoring started and was able to grab the 7-0 lead at the beginning of the first quarter. Cal put together a methodical drive on their way to the first score as they ate up over four minutes, driving the ball down the field 65 yards on eight plays with the final one being a touchdown pass. Cal then added on three minutes later to move ahead 14-0.Â
The Lakers were able to respond in the first stanza with their first of three touchdowns in the game. Mercyhurst didn't mess around and look for the long drive to get it done. Instead, it was a long play in the form of a 59-yard connection between Brian Alsobrooks and Cameron Barmore that got the Lakers on the board and make it a 14-7 game with 5:01 to go in the frame.
The second frame belonged to Cal with them outscoring Mercyhurst 17-6. The Lakers did manage to make good on another long play as Alsobrooks found Trevon Tate this time around for the score as the two put together a 49-yard play to make it a 20-13 game.
The Lakers did manage to make things interesting in the third quarter with the lone score of the frame. It was not a long play that got it done, but their third score of the game came through the air, giving Brian Alsobrooks his third TD pass of the game as he connected with Barmore once again. The Laker QB's efforts were not enough to help them come through with the win, though, as Cal added two more scores to their ledger to take the game by a final of 44-20.
By the Numbers
Brian Alsobrooks put on a show in his first start of the campaign, going 16-29 through the air for 226 yards and three scores. His trio of touchdowns makes for the first time a Mercyhurst quarterback has thrown for three TDs since October 30th of last season when Joe Carter did so against Clarion. Cameron Barmore and Trevon Tate both eclipsed 100 yards receiving in the game with Barmore leading the way with 117 while Tate had 106 and both having five catches. The Laker's defense also had a dynamic duo in Thomas Zacharyasz and Jacob Holl who both accumulated double-digit tackles for the third straight game.
