Lakers Shut Out by Seton Hill

Seton Hill, Pa. - Mercyhurst Football's final away game of the season did not go the way that they had hoped as they fell to Seton Hill 7-0. The Lakers suffered their first shutout since October 2, 2021 against Cal as they fall to 2-8.

How it Happened

The first quarter went by with a whimper as neither team could find their rhythm offensively. The two teams combined for a total of 68 yards with the Griffins accounting for the vast majority of that with 58 yards.

The second quarter was more of the same for Mercyhurst as they struggled to make it past half field during the period. Seton Hill managed to find a bit of a rhythm with them able to put the lone score of the game on the board during the canto.

Seton Hill drove the ball down the field 55 yards on eight plays, eating up nearly four minutes of clock to help them claim a lead they would never relinquish. The Griffins began their scoring drive with back-to-back big plays as they rushed for 10 yards on the opening play of the drive before throwing a 30-yard bomb to help them begin to claim the momentum. After the long throw, Seton Hill powered their way in with runs up the middle, eventually wearing down the Laker defense to make it a 7-0 game at the 12:25 mark of the period.

The next two stanzas were one that saw the two teams continually battle back and forth for the upper hand. Mercyhurst's defense helped keep them in the game throughout the third and fourth quarters as they stood tall on third downs. The Lakers had two good opportunities in the third period to get on the board, but a missed field goal by Brian Alsobrooks and a fourth down stand by the Seton Hill defense denied Mercyhurst their first dent on the scoreboard.

Th fourth quarter started with Mercyhurst looking to break through again as they were able to get the ball in the red zone. The Lakers began their drive with favorable position as Keith Brickman brought the ball out to the Seton Hill 32 on a punt return. After a pair of runs to open the drive, Alsobrooks found Justin Hill Jr. for a 17-yard reception to the 15. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Alsobrooks was picked off just two plays later, ending their best drive just short of the pylon.

By the Numbers

Seton Hill accumulated 231 yards total while the Lakers could only muster 114. It was a rough day for Mercyhurst on the ground as they had -48 yards rushing. They found more success through the air as Alsobrooks completed 18 passes with five different players recording three catches apiece with Cameron Barmore leading the way with 61 yards. Jacob Holl and Thomas Zacharyasz both had great days on defense as they both recorded double-digit tackles in the game once again. The dynamic duo hit major a mark in the game as they both eclipsed 100 tackles for the season.

What's Next

The Lakers return home for their final game of the season as they are set to host next Saturday, November 12th, with a noon start time.
