Women's Soccer Loses to IUP

Erie, Pa – Mercyhurst Women's Soccer fails to defeat IUP in their senior night game at Mercyhurst Soccer Field. Despite great efforts by the Lakers, the Crimson Hawks win by a score of 2-0 as the Lakers move to 9-4-4 and hold at second place in the PSAC West.

How It Happened

The beginning of the match saw a lot of back-and-forth play as both teams tried to create a good scoring situation early. Just two minutes in the game, Karah Van Horn received the ball inside and shot the ball, but couldn't beat IUP's goalkeeper.

A couple of minutes later Aislinn Meaney tried her luck for the Crimson Hawks, but Maddie Elbro was right there, as she dove to the right and saved the shot. IUP efforts paid off in the 28th minute of the match, as Hannah Scardina beat her defenders and found herself in the one-on-one situation with Elbro. She took a shot to the right and put the Crimson Hawks in the lead.

Scardina struck again with three minutes left on the clock in the first half, as she received the ball from Alayna Ryan, and extended the lead to two. IUP held on and Mercyhurst went into the break with a two-goal deficit.

The Lakers came out of the locker room full of energy and determination to turn the game around. In the 63rd minute of the match, Sydney Snyder had a good opportunity to score, but her shot was saved. A couple of minutes later Taryn Baxter tried her luck, but she missed.

Mercyhurst kept applying pressure and creating scoring situations but couldn't capitalize, so the Crimson Hawks won the game by a score of 2-0.

The Lakers created multiple scoring situations as they took 15 shots through the game and eight of them were on target. Their opponents only took eight shots but made them count as IUP managed to score two goals. Mercyhurst drew ten corner kicks whereas the Crimson Hawks recorded four of them.
