Mercyhurst Drops Series to Big Red

Ithaca, N.Y. - Mercyhurst Women's Hockey looked to walk away from Lynah Rink with a split Saturday afternoon but were unable to do so as they fell to Cornell. The Lakers move to 5-5 on the year as they drop the series to the Big Red 7-2.

How it Happened

The Lakers came out as the more aggressive team with them scoring the firs goal of the game. Mercyhurst was able to get their third power play goal of the season with the first score on Saturday. It was Sydney Pedersen who grabbed the goal with Jordan Mortlock and Sara Boucher both picking up assists, putting the Lakers on top 1-0 at the 7:20 mark of the opening frame. Cornell returned the favor with a power play goal of their own in the 18th minute of the canto to go into the locker room tied 1-1 with two periods to go.

The second stanza is where the Big Red jumped out to a lead and never looked back. Cornell scored four times in the frame with their first coming in the fourth minute of the game with freshman Caroline Chan getting the goal. They then added their third and fourth goals of the game just two minutes apart with the second coming in the 11th minute of the second period to give the Big Red a 4-1 lead. They tacked on one more for good measure in final few minutes of the middle canto to take a four-goal lead into the break.

Mercyhurst did manage to find the goal one more time in the contest with Kylee Mahoney grabbing goal number three of the season. Mary Sweetapple got an assist while Sara Boucher got her second assist of the game on the goal from Mahoney who streaked down the middle of the ice to help give the Lakers some life. Unfortunately, it was not enough as Mercyhurst fell 7-2.

By the Numbers

Sydney Pedersen and Kylee Mahoney both scored their third goals of the season in this one with them now being tied with Thea Johansson and Chantal Ste-Croix for second most on the team.
