Mercyhurst Falls to No. 1 West Chester

West Chester, Pa. - Mercyhurst Field Hockey found themselves inside Vonnie Gros Field Saturday evening with a matchup with one of the top teams in the country. The Lakers faced West Chester inside their own confines with the Golden Rams getting the win by a final of 6-0.

How it Happened

West Chester staked themselves to an early lead with them scoring in them scoring a pair of goals in the first quarter. It ended up taking some time to get to those goals as their first goal didn't come until the eighth minute, but once it came they found their rhythm with two goals in two minutes. The first came courtesy of Cameron Smith with just over eight minutes on the clock while Dara Spavlik scored to make it 2-0 one minute later.

The Golden Rams added one more to their tally in the second and third quarters with Valerie Van Kuijck and Jasmine Miller each scoring a goal. They then went on to score two more goals in the fourth to put this one to bed by a final of 6-0.

By the Numbers

The Golden Rams finished with 48 shots total with 32 of them on target while the Lakers tallied none. West Chester held a major advantage in corners as well with 21 while Mercyhurst collected zero. The Lakers did tally 26 saves with all of them coming courtesy of Kayla Desormeau who is up to 128 saves on the year. 

What's Next

The Lakers remain on the road with them set to play at Slippery Rock next Wednesday in the first of two games in the final week of October. Mercyhurst and the Rock face each other Wednesday, October 26th, with things set to begin at 4:00 p.m.
