Lakers Earn OT Win Over Clarkson

Postdam, N.Y. - It was a wild start to the weekend for Mercyhurst Men's Hockey with the team claiming win number one of the new season in style. The team found themselves tied with the Golden Knights after the third period with Gueorgui Feduolov scoring the game-winning goal in OT for the 2-1 win.

How it Happened

The first period proved to be a quiet one with the two teams totaling just one shot on goal combined in the frame. That shot came courtesy of Clarkson's Noah Beck who found the back of the net to give the Golden Knights their only lead of the game. Clarkson found themselves on a power play and used it to their advantage with Beck able to make good use of the feed from both Anthony Romano and Ayrton Martino who were both credited with assists at the 15:24 minute mark of the opening period.

Mercyhurst wasn't fazed by the early goal as they kept the deficit at one before knotting things up during the second period. The Lakers found more of a rhythm on offense with them firing off seven shots on goal in the second period and controlling the puck a bit more in the middle canto.

Mercyhurst worked hard throughout the second period, trying to provide themselves with good looks at the goal and their hard work finally paid off near the end of the frame. In the 18th minute of the second period, Carson Briere tied things up with goal number two of the season off the feed from Rylee St. Onge and Brendon Michaelian to help energize Mercyhurst as they went to the locker room.

The third frame was one where both teams worked hard to gain an advantage, but neither team was able to do so. The Lakers were the aggressors in the period with them getting 10 shots on goals compared to Clarkson's four, but the Golden Knight keeper Ethan Haider kept the Lakers at bay and sent back all of their attempts. Despite both teams' best efforts at trying to end things in regulation, the score remained 1-1 as the horns sounded with extra time on the way.

The Lakers did not have to wait around all that long before they found the back of the goal during the overtime period. As soon as the puck dropped, Mercyhurst was on the attack, playing with pace and purpose. The Lakers kept the puck near Clarkson's goal for much of the extra time, causing confusion for the Golden Knight goalie who never saw Feduolov's shot coming as the Mentor, Ohio native scored to give Mercyhurst their first win of the year.

By the Numbers

The Lakers grabbed their second power-play goal of the season with Carson Briere's shot in the second period, giving them their second power-play goal of the season. Mercyhurst finished the game 1-6 in power play chances and is now 2-24 on the year with their other goal coming in their previous matchup against Penn State when Rylee St. Onge scored. On top of Feduolov's goal, he was also 6-8 in faceoffs for his best percentage in a single game this season in the circle in which he's had multiple attempts. Owen Say picked up his first collegiate win in his second start, allowing just one goal and collecting 14 saves with a save percentage of .933.
