Potsdam, NY—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team tried to build on the momentum of their first win last night but couldn't secure the sweep over Clarkson on the road. The Lakers fell by a score of 5-1.
How it Happened
Early in the opening period, the Golden Knights found the back of the net after forcing a turnover on the blue line. The Lakers equalized things quickly on a goal from senior
Joseph Maziarz after
Eric Esposito won the faceoff following an icing call. The Golden Knights pulled ahead again at the 11:11 mark which would be the last score of the opening frame. The Lakers outshot the Golden Knights 17-13 during period one.
The middle period started with a successful penalty kill for the Lakers as
Keanan Stewart was booked for hooking at the 1:27 mark. Clarkson increased their lead to two goals as they snuck one in behind
Owen Say on an odd man rush. Following two unsuccessful power plays for the Lakers, Clarkson added two more goals at 16:58 and 18:50 making it 5-1 going into the final intermission.
The third was a quiet period for both teams with neither able to score. Mercyhurst took aim at the net 16 times in the final period, but couldn't put one in.
Matt Lenz took over for Say in net for the final period where he put up a solid twenty minutes saving six shots and letting in no goals.
By the Numbers
Mercyhurst had 22 attempts on goal for the night while the Laker netminders made 18 saves. They killed off three penalties; however, they were unable to convert on four power play opportunities.
