Mercyhurst Volleyball Falls to Scots

Erie, Pa. - Mercyhurst Volleyball got the new week started off with a loss as they fell to Edinboro on Tuesday night three sets to one. The Lakers fought hard but were unable to get the win on their home court as they fall to 3-17.

How it Happened

The Lakers started off playing well with them holding serve with the Fighting Scots through the midway point of the opening set. Paige Miller proved big for Mercyhurst in the early going as she collected six kills in the first 15 Laker points. Unfortunately for the Lakers, Edinboro found their rhythm on their way to a five-point win in the opening set. The Fighting Scots went on a 10-5 run after finding themselves tied with Mercyhurst at 15-15. Belle Burelli ended up playing a major part in helping Edinboro claim that advantage as she had four consecutive kills with the final one beginning the run as it made the score 18-15 in favor of the Fighting Scots.

The second set looked much like the first with the Fighting Scots able to take the win again by a score of 25-17. The Lakers staked themselves to a slim lead in the early going with them being ahead 12-9 before four straight points by Edinboro allowed them to begin to pull away. The remainder of the canto saw the Fighting Scots outscore Mercyhurst 13-8 with Edinboro now finding themselves ahead by two.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair that saw the teams use long runs to build a lead. After the score stood at 8-8, Edinboro went on an 11-1 run to take a 19-9 lead. It seemed that it would be more of the same, but the Lakers had other ideas. A 17-6 run for Mercyhurst helped them take the third set as they rallied to keep their hopes alive. Paige Miller proved big during the run with the Laker outside hitter getting four consecutive kills with the final one tying things up at 25-25 before going onto a 27-25 win.

The fourth and final set of the match was one that was close throughout. The biggest lead during the first half of the canto proved to be just six when Edinboro held a 15-9 lead midway through the stanza. The Lakers didn't allow it to become any larger than that, going on a 4-0 run. The Fighting Scots found their rhythm, though, and kept Mercyhurst at arm's length the rest of the way with their lead never dipping below two on their way to the 25-17 win.

By the Numbers

Paige Miller led the way in kills for Mercyhurst with 17 while Kylie Schnars followed close behind with 14. Alexa Mitchell led the way in assists with 32 while Zoe Gadomski and Corinne Bechtold tied for the team-high in digs with 17 apiece while Miller finished with nine.
