Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Volleyball team fell to Gannon in straight sets on Friday night at Highmark Events Center. With the win tonight, Gannon takes the season series over the Lakers 2-0.
Set one started with a strong outing offensively for the Lakers. A four-point run with kills from
Kylie Schnars and
Kaitlin Murphy put Mercyhurst up 8-4 early on. The Lakers continued their offensive charge with
Paige Miller,
Kate Hennessy and
Maggie Thomas making contributions to put them only four points from taking set one; however, Mercyhurst allowed a late surge from the Golden Knights who took set one 25-22.
Unlike set one, Gannon came out of the gate fast going up 10-4. A kill from Hennessy and a service ace from
Alexa Mitchell made the score 16-10 in favor of Gannon while three points later Schnars recorded two consecutive kills, but it wasn't enough for the Lakers to overcome their early deficit falling in set two 25-14.
The final set start similarly to the previous one with Gannon taking an early lead. Late kills from Murphy and Schnars couldn't start a rally for the Lakers as Gannon took set three by a score of 25-11.
Schnars led the Laker offense with 12 kills. Mitchell topped the leaderboard in assists and digs for Mercyhurst while
Maggie Thomas recorded two blocks.
The Lakers take the court again next Friday against Slippery Rock for the first of two weekend matches. Cal (PA) is the Lakers opponent on Saturday for Mercyhurst's final home match of the season.
