Women's Hockey Engineers Weekend Sweep of RPI

Troy, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Women's Hockey Team closed out their first road trip of the season with a 4-1 win over RPI.

How it Happened

In the first period neither team scored until the 18:18 mark of the period as RPI struck first. Despite trailing 1-0 after the first period the Lakers were out shooting the Engineers 18-5.

Mercyhurst tried to respond in the second period but could not beat the goalie until the 17:55 mark of the middle frame. Sara Boucher played the puck out of scrum to Liliane Perreault, Perreault moved the puck to Sydney Pedersen. Pedersen faked a shot and deked to her right and took a shot, the shot deflected off an RPI stick and fluttered past the goalie into the net.

The second period saw the two teams close to even in shots as the Lakers led 9-8 in the middle frame.

Just over eight minutes into the third period the Lakers took their first lead of the game. Boucher scored an even-strength goal as Megan McKay and Pedersen picked up assists. It was Boucher's second goal in as many days.

Two minutes later the Lakers extended their lead as Vanessa Upson got on the board with Makayla Javier and Thea Johansson earned assists on the power play goal. It was Upson's fourth goal of the season and it was the Lakers' second power play goal of the year.

Mercyhurst added an empty net goal with just over two minutes left in the game. Perreault scored her second goal of season while short handed, it was the teams second short handed goal of the season.

By The Numbers

The Lakers outshot the Engineers 35-18 overall in the game, it is the third time this season in which the Lakers had 35 or more shots in a game. Ena Nystrøm played against her former team and made 17 saves in the win. Three players registered five or more shots with Boucher leading the way with six shots.
