Erie, Pa.—The Mercyhurst Men's Hockey team welcomed No. 20 Penn State Nittany Lions for the back half of a home and home series. The Lakers held tough but ultimately fell 4-1 to the Nittany Lions.
How it Happened
The two teams played a back and forth game for the start of the opening period. 17:16 into the first period Penn State struck to make it 1-0 Nittany Lions.
After the first period the Lakers were being outshot 15-8 as Owen Say made 14 saves in his first period of college hockey.
In the second period, Penn State doubled their lead 3:48 into the period to make it 2-0.
Mercyhurst could not respond into the middle period and were outshot 16-6 in the middle frame.
Early in the third period the Nittany Lions took a penalty to give the Lakers a power play. Mercyhurst set up the power play in the PSU zone and went to work. Carson Briere fed the puck down low to Dalton Hunter, Hunter scanned the ice and found Rylee St. Onge on the backdoor. Hunter fed the cross-crease pass and St. Onge made no mistake and netted his third of the season.
About 11 minutes later the Nittany Lions struck again to make it a two goal game with less than seven minutes remaining. Penn State closed the game our at the 18:23 mark of the third with an empty net goal.

Say made his first career appearance for the Lakers and made 42 saves in his debut. His 42 saves is the most saves by a freshman goalie in their debut in over five plus seasons for the Lakers. Mercyhurst blocked 24 shots in the game tonight and was led by Philip Waugh, Jake Beaune and Garrett Dahm who all blocked three shots.
